Yes, you heard that right. I believe that the greatest otaku in america is a close friend of mine that is sadly unable to enter the contest. ): She's a former high school senior getting ready to start college this spring in Texas. Of course she wouldn't have time to enter a contest and head to Japan during her college life.
But alas, I will tell you about her, so I can at least show the world that she is one of the best otakus in america, in my opinion.
As I said, she is getting ready for college, majoring in Art and minoring in Japanese. A master in the Japanese language, I believe she will just travel to Japan one day and become an animator/mangaka.
Anyway, so every other day, I come to said friend's house. Usually we hang around in her quite small room, enough for a small child, at least. And the first thing that I see?
Wallscrolls and poster all over the walls. A seemingly endless pile of manga stacked up on the floor.
Her desk? Filled with various anime/manga accessories, toys, plushies (including the various Yoshis hidden in its depths) and a few wigs that she has kept from her cosplays. And the Crown Clown sword and Kanda's sword (from D. Gray Man, btw) leaning against the small desk.
I thought it wouldn't get any better than that. She just shrugged and said, "I've been keeping these things since I was in middle school!"
And you know what made me blown away? I rummage through her pile of mangas if they are interesting enough to read, and then I open her closet. To see ANOTHER bookshelf, fully filled with manga again. And then there's ANOTHER bookshelf just jutting out and can only be seen if you crawl into the tiny space provided.
I swear to Kami, she could fill the whole floor of her room with manga, and not even fit all of them in.
I praise her for her otakuness, and I do wish she was able to enter without all the pressures of college.
